La unión de Puerto Rico con Estados Unidos es infinitamente más que lo político, lo jurídico y la geografía

En la base histórica:
* La invasión de España a Puerto Rico impuso ideas como el nocivo culto a la pobreza y el sufrimiento, y la evangelización no fue el propósito principal; pero hay legados como la arquitectura y unas realidades compartidas por diferentes países que llaman a superar al insularismo y progresar.
* La invasión de Estados Unidos fue un resultado de la Guerra Hispanoamericana; hubo intereses de economía y geopolítica, pero no se impusieron ideas del nivel del culto a la pobreza y el sufrimiento, y hubo el mayor programa de construcción de facilidades educativas (como Ponce High en 1902).
En ambas invasiones hubo mentalidad imperialista; pero Estados Unidos no impuso una religión, sino que mediante la libertad de culto, propició los verdaderos movimientos de evangelización.
En lo contemporáneo y frente al debate de status político:
* El Estado Libre Asociado, como modelo de soberanía compartida, es una alternativa con plena dignidad y su naturaleza no es colonial.
* La Estadidad es una alternativa digna y válida, que no destruye lo cultural por ser Estados Unidos una nación multicultural; pero requiere una correcta educación sobre los costos y la pérdida de una presencia internacional, los beneficios y las responsabilidades, y sobre el requerimiento de una firme y constante voluntad de integración.
Sobre el concepto de la unión de Puerto Rico con Estados Unidos, se pueden ver los términos de territorio incorporado y territorio no incorporado. También se pueden analizar palabras como las del historiador Howard Zinn en su libro A People’s History of the United States: "No hay país en la historia mundial en el que el racismo haya tenido un papel tan importante y durante tanto tiempo como en los Estados Unidos".
Hay quienes argumentan que más allá de lo político, en lo cotidiano en Estados Unidos no se logra una plena integración y siempre hay diferencias. Soy positivo y considero que temas así han ido cambiando con el paso del tiempo. En un mundo imperfecto, siempre habrá muros, discrimen y conflictos. Frente a esa realidad, recuerdo que en el año electoral de 1984, un maestro afirmó que su patria es su familia.
Lo esencial es que los gobiernos influyen en el rumbo de un país en forma significativa, pero el nuevo mundo se hace desde cada persona. Tu mundo empieza en tu autoestima. Tu mundo se desarrolla en tu casa. Tu mundo surge y es nuevo cuando enfrentar la gesta fundadora con quien amas. Los puertorriqueños podemos aportar a la realización de un nuevo mundo con Estados Unidos desde la base del nuevo yo y el luminoso nosotros.
Lo esencial es lo cotidiano y la realidad suprema de que la unión de Puerto Rico con Estados Unidos es infinitamente más que lo político, lo jurídico y la geografía. Como gran muestra:
Hay extremos políticos que afirman que los matrimonios deben ser de puertorriqueños con puertorriqueños, o de puertorriqueños con personas de países cercanos con una misma base de idioma e hispanidad. Hay extremos religiosos que afirman que los matrimonios deben ser de personas del mismo lugar de congregación o la misma creencias.
Ambos extremos fallan. La gran evidencia es que hay el mismo riesgo de separación y/ divorcio en el mundo y en lo religioso.
No es casualidad la línea de argumentación de que en Estados Unidos nunca se logra que el estadounidense en lo cotidiano, vea a puertorriqueños, latinos y personas con otros orígenes, como iguales. Eso establece que la igualdad política no equivale a una igualdad en el trato diario o un apoyo de hermandad en lo laboral y comunitario.
Cada caso de puertorriqueños y latinos que triunfan en Estados Unidos confirma que positivamente se pueden superar barreras. Pero hay mucho más:
La mayor realización de que la unión de Puerto Rico con Estados Unidos es infinitamente más que lo político, lo jurídico y la geografía, depende del amor.
Poco o nada se analiza sobre matrimonios que funcionan bien de puertorriqueños con estadounidenses. Porque de lo que no se quiere hablar es de lo que más se debe hablar, cada caso de parejas y matrimonios de puertorriqueños con estadounidenses que tiene estabilidad y fructifica, glorifica al Creador y lleva a su máxima manifestación y expresión, el principio de que la unión de Puerto Rico con Estados Unidos es infinitamente más que lo político, lo jurídico y la geografía.
Los más admirables testimonios de milagros de amor, rompen estereotipos de diferencia de edad y formación, y superan fronteras de idioma, cultura, nivel socioeconómico, geografía y de todo tipo. Adelante con el amor de tu vida.

Historically:
* Spain's invasion of Puerto Rico imposed ideas such as the harmful cult of poverty and suffering, and evangelization was not the main purpose; but there are legacies such as architecture and realities shared by different countries that call for overcoming insularity and progressing.
* The United States invasion was a result of the Spanish-American War; there were economic and geopolitical interests at play, but ideas such as the cult of poverty and suffering were not imposed, and there was the largest program of educational facility construction (such as Ponce High School in 1902).
In both invasions, there was an imperialist mentality; however, the United States did not impose a religion. Instead, through freedom of worship, it fostered genuine evangelization movements.
In contemporary times, and in the face of the political status debate:
* The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as a model of shared sovereignty, is a dignified alternative, and its nature is not colonial.
* Statehood is a dignified and valid alternative that does not destroy culture, given that the United States is a multicultural nation; however, it requires proper education about the costs and potential losses of an international presence, the benefits and responsibilities, and the need for a firm and constant commitment to integration.
Regarding the concept of Puerto Rico's union with the United States, one can examine the terms incorporated territory and unincorporated territory. One can also analyze words like those of historian Howard Zinn in his book A People's History of the United States: "There is no country in world history in which racism has played such a significant role and for as long as in the United States."
Some argue that beyond the political sphere, full integration is not achieved in everyday life in the United States, and differences always exist. I am optimistic and believe that such issues have been changing over time. In an imperfect world, there will always be walls, discrimination, and conflicts. Faced with this reality, I recall that in the 1984 election year, a teacher stated that his homeland is his family.
The essential point is that governments significantly influence the course of a country, but the new world is built by each individual. Your world begins with your self-esteem. Your world develops in your home. Your world emerges and becomes new when you face the founding endeavor with those you love. Puerto Ricans can contribute to the creation of a new world with the United States, based on the new self and the luminous "we."
What is essential is the everyday reality and the supreme truth that the union of Puerto Rico with the United States is infinitely more than politics, law, and geography. As a prime example:
There are political extremes that claim marriages should be between Puerto Ricans, or between Puerto Ricans and people from neighboring countries with a shared language and Hispanic heritage. There are religious extremes that claim marriages should be between people from the same congregation or with the same beliefs.
Both extremes fail. The overwhelming evidence is that the risk of separation and/or divorce is the same in the world as it is in religion.
It is no coincidence that the line of argument is that in the United States, Americans never manage to see Puerto Ricans, Latinos, and people of other origins as equals in their daily lives. This establishes that political equality does not equate to equality in daily treatment or fraternal support in the workplace and community.
Every case of Puerto Ricans and Latinos who succeed in the United States confirms that barriers can be overcome. But there is much more:
The greatest realization that the union of Puerto Rico with the United States is infinitely more than politics, law, and geography depends on love.
Little to no analysis is given to successful marriages between Puerto Ricans and Americans. Because what we don't want to talk about is precisely what we should be talking about most: every stable and fruitful marriage between Puerto Ricans and Americans glorifies the Creator and brings to its highest expression the principle that the union of Puerto Rico and the United States is infinitely more than politics, law, and geography.
The most admirable testimonies of miracles of love break down stereotypes of age and educational differences and transcend borders of language, culture, socioeconomic status, geography, and all other kinds. Go for it with the love of your life.
